- Tennessee is 43-9 all-time vs Mississippi State. The Lady Vols are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
- Tennessee is 42-26 all-time vs Georgia. They are 7-3 in the last ten meetings.
- Tennessee, Mississippi State, and Georgia are three of the bottom four teams in the SEC at this point in the season.
- This weekend Tennessee is playing the two teams in the conference they have the most wins against.

- Tennessee assistant coach Rachel Cooper was a four year starting outside hitter for Mississippi State from 2002-2005. She was twice named the team’s MVP, was the first MSU player named SEC Player of the Week, was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times, and won the school’s Newsom Award which honors scholar-athletes. She still stands 3rd in school history in career kills, 3rd in attack attempts, and 10th in aces. Against Tennessee she had 258 attack attempts during her career, which is the 15th most by a UT opponent in the rally scoring era.
- Mississippi State’s head coach Jenny Hazelwood is the only current SEC head coach to also have played for an SEC school. She was at State from 1996-1999 and still ranks 8th in the conference record book for career assists.
- Hazelwood has been part of the only two win streaks for MSU in the UT series. She’s the head coach for the current two-match streak and was a player during part of the team’s five-match run from 1994-1996.
- Georgia is 6-4 in the last ten meetings in Athens.
- The UT/UGA match-up is the second longest in school history with 68 matches, and at least one meeting a year every year since 1979.
- Only two matches between the Lady Vols and Georgia in the rally scoring era have been decided in four sets; sixteen matches were sweeps for one or the other team, while eight matches took five sets.
- In the 34 meetings since coach Patrick took the helm, Georgia has swept Tennessee only three times.
- Tennessee is 24-27 in televised matches since 2001. They’ve lost the last seven in a row.
- Georgia head coach Lizzy Stemke comes from a family of sports players, including her brother Rob Fitzgerald who played baseball for Tennessee.
- In his 18th season at Tennessee, coach Patrick is by far the longest serving coach in school history and the winningest. But with the good milestones come the bad milestones. The team will look to prevent Patrick from reaching career loss #200 this weekend.
- Tennessee is trying to avoid just the third 0-7 conference start in school history and just the second 0-8 start. The 2013 squad went 0-7 before getting their first SEC win. The 1995 team went 0-14 on the season in league play.
- Lady Vol freshman defensive specialist Claudia Coco will have a homecoming of sorts this weekend. The Georgia native will face off against an opponent with five players who attended the same volleyball club she did, A5.

Tigers take Tennessee in three
The Lady Vols fell to LSU in straight sets this afternoon (25-19, 25-19, 25-16). More tonight.
Jamie Lea had eight kills, four blocks, and hit .300. Raina Hembry had six kills and six blocks. Lexi Dempsey and Taylor Johnson had 11 assists each. Bridgette Villano dug up 9 balls.
For the fifth time this season, UT held an opponent to four or less blocks. LSU held Tennessee to the second fewest attack attempts of the rally scoring era.

Scrappy Lady Vols fall to #13 Wildcats
Tennessee gave a ranked Kentucky squad all they could handle for two sets, but couldn’t prevent the sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-13). More tonight.
UPDATE: Jamie Lea had eight kills and three blocks. Shealyn Kolosky hit .357 with seven kills. Raina Hembrey hit .364 and had four blocks. Lexi Dempsey put up 14 assists while Taylor Johnson added in 11 more. Kanisha Jimenez and Bridgette Villano had 9 digs each.
Kentucky’s Kaz Brown had eight blocks, which is the fourth most allowed by UT in a three-set match since 2001. Six of those blocks came in the third set.

2014 Match Notes: vs Kentucky and LSU
- Tennessee is 30-44 all-time vs Kentucky — depending on who you ask! The Lady Vols are 6-4 in the last 10 meetings, but have lost three in a row to the Wildcats. UT has won three of the last four home matches vs UK.
- Tennessee is 21-34 all-time vs LSU. The Lady Vols are 5-5 in the last 10 meetings, with the Tigers taking the last match.
- Though both teams count it slightly different, the UT/UK match-up is the longest rivalry in program history. Counting matches claimed between each school, they’ve faced each other 74 times. It’s also the longest continuously played match-up with the teams meeting at least once a year every year since 1977.
- Tennessee faces their second ranked opponent of the year in the #13 Wildcats. Since 2001, the team is 26-45 vs ranked foes. However, they’re 4-2 in that time when the ranked opponent is Kentucky.
- In their last ten matches combined, Tennessee and Kentucky have identical .202 hitting percentages.
- Including this match, the last three meetings with LSU will have been played in Knoxville.
- Tennessee is trying to avoid just the third 0-5 or 0-6 conference start in school history. The 2013 squad went 0-7 before getting their first SEC win. The 1995 team went 0-14 on the season in league play.
- LSU’s Fran Flory was the Kentucky head coach for 5 years in the 1990s.
- Besides facing UT as an assistant coach, LSU’s Jill Lytle Wilson also faced off against Tennessee and head coach Rob Patrick as a player there. As a member of the team from 1997-2000 she went 0-4 vs the Lady Vols. As a coach she’s 6-7.
- LSU assistant coach Sam Ojie is also familiar with Patrick coached Lady Vol teams, having faced them during four of his five coaching jobs: Tulane in 2000, Georgia in 2006, Oklahoma in 2010, and LSU since 2012. His only win vs UT came last year with the Tigers.
- LSU’s Katie Lindelow and Lady Vol Kendra Turner both played club ball at Louisiana Volleyball.
- For the seventh year in a row, Tennessee is hosting a Dig for the Cure event to raise money for and awareness of the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support — those doing so will gain free admission to the match.
- The cause is obviously the most important aspect of this event, but just for fun here are some statistics on the previous Dig for the Cure matches. For the first four years Tennessee always played a team from the state of Alabama. The Lady Vols never lost a set until the fifth year. UT has only lost one match while holding the event. And over the past five years the team and fans have raised almost $10,000.

2014 Recap: vs Texas A&M and Alabama
- UT is 6-5 all-time vs Texas A&M. This was Tennessee’s fifth loss in a row vs a ranked opponent.
- UT is 33-14 vs Alabama. Tennessee had not lost a match in Knoxville since 2007.
- Tennessee had some lower than their norm statistics vs Texas A&M. (All numbers are since the rally-scoring era began in 2001.) The Lady Vols only had two total team blocks, which is their second lowest total. UT only dug up 24 balls, also their second lowest total, and the first time since 2003 the team was under 30 in a match. With just 23 assists, Tennessee had their fifth lowest total. And their 87 attack attempts were the 11th fewest.
- The Alabama match was the fifth highest attended home match in program history, with 1,780 on hand.

Alabama outlasts Tennessee
Despite several chances to extend the match, the Lady Vols lost a heartbreaker against Alabama in four this afternoon (25-15, 25-20, 20-25, 29-27) . More soon.
UPDATE: Thirteen Lady Vols took to the court in this match. Jamie Lea had 11 kills. Kanisha Jimenez had nine, along with a match high six blocks. Shealyn Kolosky had seven kills and four blocks. Raina Hembry had four blocks as well. Lexi Dempsey out up 25 assists, while Taylor Johnson added in nine more. Bridgette Villano dug up 16 balls, and Kelsey Bawcombe eight more. Aggies sweep Tennessee
Tennessee dropped a three set match to #21 ranked Texas A&M this evening (25-14, 25-21, 25-15). Much more soon.
UPDATE: Kelsey Bawcombe led the team with both ten kills and six digs. With just three errors on 22 attempts she hit .318. Shealyn Kolosky had six kills and hit .444. Lexi Dempsey had 12 assists.
As a team the Lady Vols had some lower than usual numbers in assists, attacks, digs, and especially blocks — they had only two total team blocks, which is the second lowest total of the rally scoring era. More on those in the weekend recap.

Cedar Bluff is Knoxville area champion
Long time readers know (and hopefully tolerate!) that I occasionally post how my kids’ volleyball teams are doing. Here’s the latest — and, I promise, last until at least next spring.
Congratulations to Cedar Bluff on winning the local middle school championship tonight! The Giants defeated Powell and Bearden to open the tournament before knocking off defending champion Farragut for the title. Congrats to the junior varsity team on winning their division as well.
2014 Match Notes: vs Texas A&M and Alabama
Tennessee is home for the next two weeks, starting with their SEC home opener vs Texas A&M this Friday and a Sunday match vs Alabama.
- UT is 33-13 all-time vs Alabama. Coach Rob Patrick is 20-8. Tennessee has an 9-1 advantage in the last ten matches, but the Crimson Tide won the last meeting. Tennessee hasn’t lost a match in Knoxville since 2007.
- UT is 6-4 all-time vs Texas A&M. Coach Patrick is 2-2. The Aggies have a two match winning streak going vs the Lady Vols.
- Alabama is receiving votes in the Coaches Poll this week for the first time in school history and is an unofficial #30.
- At #21, TAMU is the first ranked opponent Tennessee will face this season. UT is 2-1 vs ranked Aggie squads. Every meeting has taken place in Knoxville.

- Ten of the last 13 matches with Alabama have been sweeps for one team or the other: seven for UT and three for UA.
- In the entire 46 match series with Alabama dating back to 1973, only five match have gone to five sets. The Lady Vols won the first three in 1979, 1990, and 1991. The Tide won the last two in 2005 and 2006.
- A&M has been a member of three different conferences, and the Lady Vols have played them while they were a member of each. Texas A&M was a member of the Southwest Conference from 1915 to 1996 — Tennessee was 4-2 against them during those years. They played in the Big 12 Conference from 1996 to 2012 — Tennessee met them once, a win during the NCAA Tournament in 2004. In 2012, the Aggies joined the SEC — Tennessee is 1-2 since then.
- Among her many awards, Aggie coach Laurie Corbelli is an Olympic silver medalist as part of the 1984 USA volleyball team.
- Tennessee’s sole senior, Shealyn Kolosky, is one away from recording her 200th career block. She would be just the 13th player to reach that milestone in the rally scoring era.
- Ashley Mariani and Texas A&M’s Katelyn Labhart both played club under former UT assistant coach Mike Minnis at Dallas Summit. Shealyn Kolosky and Alabama’s Natalie Murison both played club for Sports Performance. Sabrina Tavakoli and Alabama’s Brooke Feld both were members of Mizuno Long Beach.
- Tenneessee players have been featured twice in the university newspaper in the last week: Kelsey “Bawcombe stepping up ‘sooner than expected’ for the Lady Vols” and “Jamie Lea becoming all-around player for the Lady Vols”.
- Promotions: The first 200 fans to the Texas A&M match will receive free sunglasses. Kids 12 and under will free admission to the Alabama match. Anyone showing their ticket/stub from the Florida football game will receive free admission to either match. After Sunday’s match, the team will hold a free youth volleyball clinic for 8th graders and below (see UT website for signup details).

2014 Recap: at Arkansas and at Missouri
- Hard to believe but we’re already at the half-way point in the season. With 16 matches left to go, the Lady Vols are 7-9 in their first 16 games.
- In conference openers since 1978, the team is 18-19. Under coach Rob Patrick UT is 9-9.
- UT is 17-17 all-time vs Arkansas. This was Tennessee’s first loss in Fayetteville since 2006.
- UT is 2-4 vs Missouri. Tennessee has never won a match played in Columbia.
- Lady Vol setter Lexi Dempsey put her name into the Tennessee record book this weekend. With 1,458 assists in her two seasons in Knoxville she has moved into the top ten for career assists at UT.

The Lady Vols lost in three to Missouri in their first match on the new SEC Network (25-19, 25-15, 25-16). Kendra Turned had a team-leading eight kills. Shealyn Kolosky and Iesha Bryant had four blocks each, and Kanisha Jimenez put up three more. Lexi Dempsey had 11 digs and eight assists. Bridgette Villano had ten digs.
As a team, Tennessee had their fifth lowest kill total of the rally scoring era with just 26. It was also the first match since at least 2001 where no player reached double-digit assists.

Arkansas sweeps Lady Vols
Tennessee fell in their first conference match of the year to Arkansas in three sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-19). Kendra Turner has nine kills, while Jamie Lea added eight more. With no errors on 17 attempts, Lea hit .471. Lexi Dempsey had 29 assists, and had four kills on nine attacks with no errors for a .444. Claudia Coco dug up nine balls; Bridgette Villano had eight. Kanisha Jimenez had three blocks and eight digs.
Arkansas’ Meredith Hayes put down an impressive 24 kills — the most by a UT opponent in a three set match in the rally scoring era and the first player to reach 20 in eight years. Ana Sofia Jusino hit .778 and Chanell Clark-Bibbs .667 — those are the seventh and fifteenth highest hitting percentages (with 5 or more attempts) by an opposing player since 2001.

2014 Match Notes: at Arkansas and at Missouri
Tennessee begins SEC play this weekend, on the road vs Arkansas and Missouri. (Apologies — I’m running way behind this week, so these notes will be abbreviated.)
- The Lady Vols have a mixed record in conference openers. Since 1978, the team is 18-18. Under coach Rob Patrick UT is 9-8.
- UT is 17-16 all-time vs Arkansas. Since 2001, the series is 14-9. Tennessee has an 8-2 advantage in the last ten matches, but both losses have come in the past two seasons. In Fayetteville, the Lady Vols have won seven of the last ten meetings, including every match since 2007.
- UT has met Missouri only five times in program history and stands at 2-3. Tennessee has lost both matches played in Columbia.
- This will be just the second match played vs Missouri where neither team is ranked. Tennessee won the first such match in 2012 by a score of 3-2.
- After an impressive 16-5 run, the Lady Vols haven’t won a televised match in their last six attempts. Tennessee has played 50 matches on TV since 2001, and holds a 24-26 record.
- Both teams being played this weekend are relative newcomers to the SEC. Since it’s founding, the Southeastern Conference has been extremely stable — especially when compared to others. In 1932, 13 schools created the league. For the first 35 years of it’s existence the only changes were the exit of three teams. For about the next 30 years the conference held firm with ten of it’s charter members. In the early 1990s, Arkansas and South Carolina became the first teams ever invited to join. And about 20 years later, Missouri and Texas A&M were extended invitations.

2014: Lady Vol Classic Recap
The Lady Vols finished their home tourney with wins vs Mercer and Montana State and losses to Austin Peay and Memphis. After 14 matches their record is even at seven wins, seven losses.
- Tennessee is now 3-1- vs the Lady Govs, 1-0 vs the Greyhounds, 22-8 vs the Tigers, 1-0 vs the Bears, and 1-0 vs the Bobcats all-time.
- The Lady Vols are now 29-8 in home openers since 1978. Under coach Rob Patrick the team is 14-4. In their opening week at home UT is 78-24 since 1978, and 42-14 under Patrick.
- Coach Patrick is 40-12 in Lady Vol Classic matches. This was just the second time one of his teams lost more than a single match in the tournament.
- UT met seven of their opponents this year for the first time in program history, and went 5-2 vs them: Northern Illinois, Omaha, Evansville, Kennesaw State, Loyola (MD), Mercer, and Montana State.
- The defeats to Austin Peay and Memphis doubled the number of losses to fellow state teams UT has had since 1991. The last time the Lady Vols lost two matches to state schools in the same season was 1980 — both to Memphis. The last time Tennessee lost two matches to two different state schools in the same season was 1978 — Memphis and ETSU. The Lady Vols are 135-29-4 (.815) vs other Tennessee schools. Coach Patrick is 24-4 (.857).
- Austin Peay won more sets in their match vs Tennessee this week then they had in all four of the previous meetings combined.
- Austin Peay only had eight hitting errors — no other UT opponent in the rally scoring era (2001-present) has had fewer. As a team the Lady Govs hit .384 — the 12th highest in APSU history and the sixth highest by a UT opponent since 2001. Tennessee did pretty well themselves, hitting .262 — the fourth highest hitting percentage by the Lady Vols in a loss since 2001.
- Kelsey Bawcombe’s four aces vs Montana State were the eighth most by a Lady Vol in a sweep since 2001.
- Tennessee played their first five-set game of the year in their 13th match. Since 1982, that’s the fourth furthest into the season they’ve gone before going to five. In 2004, the team didn’t go to the tie-breaker until their 28th match. And in 1989 and 2002, they went to five for the first time in their 16th matches.
- Four players (excluding newcomers) matched or exceeded a personal career high this past weekend: Lexi Dempsey (digs in a five set match vs MU, points, first career solo block, block assists in a 3 set match, and total blocks in a 3 set match, vs MSU); Shealyn Kolosky (points in a 4 set match vs U of M); Ashley Mariani (block assists in a 3 set match and total blocks in a 3 set match vs MSU); and Bridgette Villano (digs in a 5 set match and assists vs MU).
- The Lady Vols have completed the non-confernce portion of their regular season schedule. Since 2001, they have been fairly dominant in those matches. In total, they’ve played teams from 26 conferences and have a winning record vs 22 of them. UT only has a losing record vs one conference.

Lady Vols defeat Mercer, Montana State
Tennessee earned their first home win of the year by defeating Mercer in a tight five set affair (25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-13). The Lady Vols took Montana State down in much quicker fashion with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-15, 25-23). Freshman Kelsey Bawcombe was named to the All-Tournament team. Much more soon.
UPDATE: Against the Bears, the first five set match of the year, Bawcombe had 17 kills, hit .317, served two aces, had four blocks, and got her first ever double double with 15 digs. Kendra Turner also had 17 kills. Kanisha Jimenez had ten kills and 13 digs, for her third career double double. Iesha Bryant put down five blocks, and Shealyn Kolosky had four. Lexi Dempsey got a double double with 44 assists and 15 digs. Bridgette Villano had 12 digs and seven assists. Mid-2012 was the last time three players earned double doubles in a single match.

Jimenez led the team with 11 kills vs Montana State, hitting .450. Bawcombe had nine kills and seven digs. She also had four aces — the eighth most by a Lady Vol in a sweep since 2001. Kolosky hit .500 with six kills and no errors. Lexi Dempsey picked up career double double #20 with 30 assists and 10 digs. She also had three blocks, including her very first solo. Ashley Mariani also had three blocks.
