2012 Déjà vu?
While some fans might be understandably disappointed by a few of the results of the 2012 season so far considering the expectations after last year, there is no reason to lose hope. Check out where Tennessee stands now compared to the year after the last time they won the SEC Championship.

Weekly Recaps 2012: at LSU and Arkansas
- Tennessee is now 20-33 all-time vs LSU and 17-15 vs Arkansas.
- Kelsey Robinson became the 18th Lady Vol to reach 1,000 kills. At her current pace she could reach the #12 spot by the end of the regular season. With her 12th and 13th of the season this past weekend, Robinson now has a career 40 double doubles, passing the 39 put up by Amy Morris. Robinson now stands at third for most in the rally scoring era.
- Coming into the season, a UT athlete had picked up 30 or more digs in a match only 15 times in school history. Ellen Mullins did it twice in less than a week. She had 34 digs vs Missouri on October 5th, then 32 more on October 10th vs LSU. This was Mullins’ third career 30+ digs match. Only two other Lady Vols have ever done that — 2004 SEC Defensive Player of the Year Amy Morris and 2009 SEC Libero of the Year Chloe Goldman.
- The squad as a whole had a big night defensively vs LSU with 106 digs — matching the record for most in the rally scoring era. And it wasn’t all Mullins’ stellar performance: six players ended the match with double digit digs, also matching a rally scoring era high.
- Offensively the team put up quite a barrage with 212 attack attempts, the eleventh most since 2001, and the first time they’ve gone over 200 in three years. However, at .193 they had their second lowest hitting in a victory of the year.
- Just over half way through the season Tennessee has played 7 five-set matches. They’ve only played more than that in an entire season 5 times in program history. They have won 6 of those five-set matches, already tying the school record for most such wins in a season.
- With wins over Missouri, Georgia, and LSU that went the distance, the Lady Vols won 3 five-set matches in a row for just the second time in school history, the last coming in 2008.
- The Lady Vols have had trouble getting much momentum in their series with LSU. Their latest victory was their third in a row over the Tigers. That matches UT’s second longest winning streak ever over LSU.
- LSU’s 18 blocks was the fourth most by an opponent since 2001. Khourtni Fears had 10, which is the seventh most by an individual opponent in that time. Meghan Mannari was just six digs shy of the all-time UT record for most digs by an opponent since 2001 with 29, while the team had the fourth most opponent digs since 2001 with 105.
- Four Lady Vols notched double doubles in the same match for the first time since November 2001.
- With the win over Arkansas, Tennessee has matched their longest winning streak of the season so far with four.
- The Lady Vols have won 10 of the last 11 vs the Razorbacks and 14 of the last 17.
- Mullins and Robinson are closing in on joining the 1,000 digs club. Robinson is 5 away, Mullins 75.

Lady Vols outlast LSU
For the third time in just six days the Lady Vols earned a hard fought five-set victory, this time over LSU (15-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-21, 15-7). There will be a lot of numbers to go through with this one! Here are the most obvious ones right now — there may be more on the weekly recap!
- Kelsey Robinson surpassed 1,000 career kills.
- Ellen Mullins had 30+ digs for the second time in less than a week.
- Four players had double doubles in the same match for the first time since November 2001.
- The team had a rally scoring era record tying 106 digs.
- Tennessee is 6-1 in five-set matches this year.
- This is just the second time in school history the team has won back-to-back-to-back five-set matches, the last coming in 2008.
- The now three-match winning streak over LSU ties for just the second longest for UT in the series’ history.
Despite coming in to the match late, Robinson was just one block short of the school’s third triple double. She had 18 kills, 17 digs, and 9 blocks. Tiffany Baker led the match with a career high 24 kills and picked up a double double with 10 digs. Kayla Jeter had 13 kills and also picked up a double double with 10 digs. DeeDee Harrison had 8 kills and 6 blocks. Olivia Okoro came into the match late and helped spark the team with 5 blocks. Mary Pollmiller had 54 assists and 16 digs. Ellen Mullins had 32 digs. And Jasmine Brown smashed her career high with 14 digs, including a couple of spectacular saves in the fifth set.
Match Notes 2012: at LSU
- Sorry for these abbreviated notes. Check out the UT & LSU pages below for much more info.
- Tennessee is 19-33 all-time vs LSU. UT is 4-6 in the last ten matches, and 3-7 in their last ten in Baton Rouge.
- The team’s two wins over the Tigers last year were their first back to back wins since 2000. In the series history, the Lady Vols have only put together four streaks against LSU: 2 wins in a row in 1982-83, 3 wins in a row from 1983-84, a series long 5 match winning streak from 1996-2000, and the current 2 game stretch.
- For the third time this year the Lady Vols will play a nationally televised game on ESPNU. While the team has a stellar 13-5 record over their last 18 TV matches, they’ve lost three out of the last four. All three losses were on ESPNU but the one win was vs LSU.
- Tennessee and LSU have played on TV four times since 2001. Every match has been a sweep for one team or the other.

Mullins gets SEC honor
Congratulations to Ellen Mullins on being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week! This is her second career conference weekly award.
Weekly Recaps 2012: Missouri and Georgia
- Tennessee is now 2-2 all time vs Missouri and 42-24 vs Georgia.
- In addition to raising money for a good cause on their Dig for the Cure nights, the Lady Vols have also won every match when holding the event.
- Believe it or not, Tennessee is now over halfway through the regular season with just 13 games remaining on the schedule.
- The Lady Vols reached their 10th win of the season in their 15th match, the longest it has taken them to reach that milestone since 2008.
- UT has played in 6 five-setters through 16 matches this year. That’s more than they played all year in 6 the last 10 seasons. The team has gone 5-1 in those matches so far.
- Tennessee fought back from a two set deficit against Georgia. It was the 16th win after being down 0-2 in school history. From 1997 to 2008 the team was only able to accomplish that feat once. Since 2009, UT has won one game in that fashion every season.
- Tennessee’s 16 team blocks were the most they’ve put down all season, and the second most of the past three years.
- There were some nice individual performances this weekend:
- Ellen Mullins had 34 digs vs Missouri. That’s the seventh best total in school history, and the second most since 2008 and the 25 point rally scoring era. It’s also the fourth highest by any SEC player this season.
- DeeDee Harrison’s nine blocks vs Georgia were the most scored by a Lady Vol all season and the sixth most in the conference.
- Kayla Jeter’s 27 kills vs Georgia were the second most at UT all year, and the second most in the conference so far as well.
- Mary Pollmiller’s 54 assists vs both Missouri and Georgia were the third most on the team this season.
- In the match earlier this season Mizzou’s Whitney Little had the 6th most blocks against Tennessee since 2001. This weekend she bettered that number and now has the 4th most with 11 blocks.
- Missouri’s Lisa Henning also had a big day, getting the 10th most kills against the Lady Vols in the rally scoring era and a top ten total all-time vs the team with 74 attack attempts.
- This past weekend was only the 11th time in school history the team has won back to back five-set matches. This year is just the second time UT has ever won two distinct pairs of back to back five-set matches in the same season.

Another scheduling note
Yet another short week is upon us with a Wednesday match at LSU next on the schedule. Which means I’ll be rushing out the updates over the next few days that I usually take all week to do. And I promise to get those photos up just as soon as I can!
On top of the crazy volleyball schedule, I also run another website — about presidential elections. So as you might imagine while that site only really takes up a lot of my time once every four years, I’m in the thick of those updates right now. Luckily, barring any 2000-type controversy, after November things will slow down considerably there.

Lady Vols complete comeback vs Georgia
Tennessee started with a two set deficit but was able to hold on for the rare five set comeback. It was just the fifth time since 2001 UT has achieved the feat. More tonight.
Leading the way with a career high 27 points and her third ever double double with 12 digs was fifth year senior Kayla Jeter, who hit .444 on 54 swings. Tiffany Baker earned her second double double of the weekend with 16 kills and 14 digs. DeeDee Harrison led the team with 9 blocks, the most by a Lady Vol this season. Leslie Cikra was just two behind her with 7. Mercedes Vaughn added in 4 more. Mary Pollmiller had 54 assists and 11 digs while Ellen Mullins had 14 digs.

Tennessee gets win over Missouri
The Lady Vols exact a measure of revenge against Missouri, getting the win tonight in five (25-12, 23-25, 27-25, 22-25, 15-11). Some big numbers got put up, including a top ten all time school record for digs by Ellen Mullins. More soon.
Tennessee got their tenth win of the season tonight. Mullins led the match with 34 digs, the seventh most in school history. Tiffany Baker had career highs with 23 kills and 16 digs for her sixth double double and her first of the year. She also added in 3 blocks. Leslie Cikra had 13 kills and 3 blocks. Kayla Jeter had 12 kills and 2 blocks. DeeDee Harrison led the squad with 5 blocks. Mercedes Vaughn had 3 blocks. Mary Pollmiller picked up a double double with 54 assists and 14 digs.
Match Notes 2012: Missouri and Georgia
- For the fifth year in a row, Tennessee volleyball is hosting a Dig for the Cure event to raise money for and awareness of the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support — those doing so will gain free admission to the match as well.
- The cause is obviously the most important aspect of this event, but just for fun here are some statistics on the previous Dig for the Cure matches. This is the first time Tennessee is playing a team from outside the state of Alabama. The Lady Vols have never lost a set. And over the past four years the team and fans have raised around $6000.
DIG FOR THE CURE MATCHES 2008 3-0 win vs Auburn $1000+ 2009 3-0 win vs Auburn $1000+ 2010 3-0 win vs Auburn $1300+ 2011 3-0 win vs Alabama $2650
- The Lady Vols are looking for their tenth win of the season this weekend. Over coach Rob Patrick’s tenure the average time it has taken the team to reach that threshold is fifteen matches. Eight times they have done it faster than that, seven times it took them longer. The quickest they’ve ever got there was in 1973 and 1986, when they reached ten wins in their tenth matches. Under coach Patrick they reached ten wins in their eleventh match in 2004.
- Kelsey Robinson is nine kills away from becoming the eighteenth Lady Vol to reach 1,000. She’s forty-three digs away from becoming the twelfth Lady Vol to reach 1,000. If she reaches both milestones she’ll be just the fifth UT player to ever do both.
- Tennessee is tops among the three teams at Thompson-Boling Arena this weekend in the first NCAA RPI rankings. The Lady Vols are #27, while Missouri is #49, and Georgia #71.
MISSOURI AT TENNESSEE
- Tennessee is 1-2 all-time vs Missouri.
- Despite meeting three previous times this is the first trip to Knoxville for Mizzou. The first and third meetings took place in Missouri while the second meeting was an Elite Eight match in Pennsylvania.
- This is the first match between the teams where both are unranked.
- The Missouri loss earlier this season was the eighth time in the past decade UT has lost a match after going up 2-0, and the first match since 2003 that they were within two points of a sweep win but lost.
- While the last match was close in just about every area there was one aspect that the Tigers dominated — they had a huge night blocking vs the Lady Vols, with 18 total team put backs, the fourth most of the rally scoring era by an opponent and the most by an opponent in five years. Middle blocker Whitney Little’s 10 block assists was the third most by an individual in that time frame. And Regan Peltier and Taylor Simpson both had 3 solo blocks each, tying for the fourth most by an opponent since 2001.
- Missouri assistant coach Lindsey Hunter played for the Tigers in the first two meetings against Tennessee.
- MU is playing their inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference after having competed previously in the Big 12 where they went 149-167 over 16 years in the league against some tough volleyball competition.
GEORGIA AT TENNESSEE
- Tennessee is 41-24 all-time vs Georgia and 8-2 in their last ten meetings. Six of those eight wins were sweeps. The Lady Vols are a perfect 10-0 in their last ten matches in Knoxville. Their last home loss to the Bulldogs came in 2001. UT looks to continue a three match winning streak.
- Tennessee’s last three losses to Georgia were all five set matches.
- UT’s 41 wins over the Bulldogs (and a matching 41 wins over the other SEC Bulldogs — Mississippi State) are the most over any one team in school history.
- Before her time at Georgia, head coach Lizzy Stemke previously faced Tennessee as an assistant at North Carolina in 2006, and then #1 Nebraska in 2007.
