Tennessee earned their 10th SEC win of the year, and their 5th in a row, with a four-set victory over Mississippi (21-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23).
With Missouri’s loss to South Carolina earlier in the evening, the Lady Vols are now in a tie with Florida for second place in the conference.
Tessa Grubbs paced the offense with 22 kills. Addisyn Rowe had 17. Erica Treiber had 14 while hitting .565. Rocky Perinar and Danielle Mahaffey also hit over .300 on the night. Treiber led the team in blocking with 5, with Rowe and Mahaffey just behind with 4. Sedona Hansen had 34 assists while Callie Williams added 21 more. Madison Coulter picked up 15 digs and Brooke Schumacher had 11.
Treiber became the 20th Lady Vol in program history to reach 1,000 kills. She also moved into a tie for 4th place all-time at UT for career blocks.
UM’s Emily Stroup had 31 kills, the 4th most by a UT opponent in the rally scoring era, and the most since 2007. Stroup also recorded her 1,000th career kill in the match.
Mississippi notched a .273 hitting percentage, the 9th highest by a opponent in the rally scoring era when losing the match.
Sorry for the late post. I’m having some computer issues so these notes will be abbreviated! If I can get back up and running soon I may try to flesh them out.
Tennessee is 43-10 vs Mississippi. They are 6-4 in both their last ten matches and their last ten matches in Oxford.
Tennessee is 7-10 vs Texas A&M. They are 2-8 in their last ten matches and 2-5 all-time in Knoxville.
With a win over the Rebels, UT would have 5 conference wins in a row for the first time since 2012. They’d also have 10 SEC wins for the first time since 2012 as well.
The Lady Vols are currently half-a-game out of second place in the league standings.
In the rally-scoring era, Tennessee is:
— 107-30 when ranked
— 95-15 when ranked and their opponent is not
— 1-4 when ranked #25
— 7-0 vs Mississippi when ranked
— 1-0 vs Texas A&M when rankedDuring the time-formerly-known-as-intermission during the Tennessee match vs the Aggies, the NCAA Selection Committee is going to reveal a list of the top ten teams if the tournament were being held this week.

I’ve had a page on the stats page compiling SEC Players of the Week by team for several years. This week I updated it so you can now view them by years as well.
The Lady Vols are ranked #25 in this week’s AVCA Coaches Poll. This is the first time the team has earned a spot in the poll since September 2012.
Two Tennessee players also earned recognition from the conference. Tessa Grubbs is the Offensive Player of the Week and the overall Player of the Week, while Addisyn Rowe picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors. Grubbs’ overall award is the first by a Lady Vol since the league started handing it out in 2015. Her offensive award is the first by a UT player since Leslie Cikra’s 2012 recognition. Rowe’s defensive award is the school’s first since Raina Hembry’s in 2015.
- “Tennessee’s Tessa Grubbs averaged 5.38 points and 5.13 kills per set and posted a .323 hitting percentage over two conferences wins this past week. She tallied a career-high 27 kills in the come-from-behind win at Georgia, with 15 kills coming in final three sets, including five kills on eight swings with no errors (.625) in the fifth set.”
- “Tennessee’s Addisyn Rowe averaged 1.25 blocks per set in a 2-0 week for the Lady Volunteers. She registered a career-high eight blocks in the victory at Georgia on Sunday, with her final block assist ending the match at 15-11 in the fifth set.”
The Lady Vols completed a big comeback vs Georgia this afternoon to get a five-set victory (19-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-11). The last time UT came back from 0-2 was 2015. Before today they’d only done it six times in the 2000s, and seventeen times in school history. The last time they did it vs Georgia was 2012. More tonight!
UPDATE: Tessa Grubbs had a match leading and career high 27 kills. Erica Treiber had 16 kills and hit .520. Lily Felts had 13 kills. Addisyn Rowe’s 8 blocks were the most by any player on the court. Alyssa Andreno had 6. Sedona Hansen put up 36 assists. Callie Williams had 17. Brooke Schumacher dug up 24 balls. Felts completed her third double-double with 10 digs.
The Lady Vols’ 71 kills were their most in a match this season, and the 3rd most in a match since 2012.
Tennessee’s 2 wins this week bring their conference total to 9 so far this year — surpassing their best total of the previous five seasons. (1 SEC win in both 2013 and 2014, 7 wins in both 2015 and 2016, and 5 wins last year.) With only 7 league contests remaining, UT is guaranteed to at least not have another losing SEC record for the first time since 2012.
Over half of Georgia’s SEC games this season have gone to five sets. Out of 11 total matches, they’ve played 7 five-setters and lost 5.
Tennessee earned a hard fought sweep (25-21, 29-27, 25-19) over South Carolina on national TV this evening, keeping them firmly in the top of the SEC standings. More soon.
UPDATE: Tessa Grubbs led the match with 14 kills. Lily Felts had 10 kills and two aces. Erica Treiber put down 9 while hitting .471. She also had 4 blocks. Addisyn Rowe, Raquel Perinar, and Grubbs had 2 blocks each. Callie Williams was the only player with double digit digs, picking up 11. She just missed a double-double with 9 assists. Sedona Hansen had 26 assists.
This is just the second match in the rally scoring era, and the first versus a conference opponent, where 5 UT players scored a solo block. Those five blocks also stand as the 9th most in a UT match since 2001 and the 2nd most in a three-set match in that time.
Tennessee held the Gamecocks to just 2 team blocks. That ties the 10th fewest by an opponent in school rally scoring history — and it’s the third time they’ve done it this year! This is just the 6th time since 2001 an opponent didn’t stat a block assist.
SC’s 13 service errors were the 5th most by a UT opponent in a three-set rally scoring match.
In total, Tennessee had 1 more kill than South Carolina, 1 more attack, 1 more assist, and 1 more dig.
First year coach Eve Rackham has now faced every other new coach in the league at least once and is 3-0.
The Lady Vols have moved into third place in the conference standings, behind first place Kentucky (the only SEC to have defeated them) and second place Florida. UT is tied with Missouri, but beat them earlier in the year.
I’m back to my regular schedule just in time for Tennessee’s first home match in two-and-a-half weeks! They’ll take on South Carolina Wednesday, then travel to Georgia on Sunday. Before we get to that though, here’s a look back at this past weekend’s games.
WEEKEND RECAP With their last victory, Tennessee has clinched a winning record this season!
Erica Treiber’s 6 aces vs Texas A&M were the most by any Lady Vol since Kylie Marshall’s 9 vs Appalachian State in 2007. (Fun fact: that 2007 match was the first one I attended after starting this website!)
Treiber now has 30 aces on the season. She is one of only seven Lady Vols in the rally-scoring era to reach that milestone, and one of only two to do so after 2004.
Tennessee had season highs in digs and attacks in the four-set win over LSU.
They also had their lowest hitting percentage of the season in a winning effort in that match as well, with a .178.
Tessa Grubbs had 39 kills over her two matches this past weekend.
Sedona Hansen added two more double-doubles to her stat sheet, bringing her to a career total of 43.
Madison Coulter has had 3 20+ dig performances over the last month. She’s averaging over 18 digs per match in that time.
Only two players have been on the court for every set this season so far: Trieber and Addisyn Rowe. Hansen is just one set short of that mark.
MATCH NOTES Tennessee is 37-31 all-time vs South Carolina. UT is 4-6 in their last ten meetings, and 7-3 in their last ten in Knoxville. The Gamecocks have a four-match winning streak.
Tennessee is 46-28 all-time vs Georgia. UT is 6-4 in both their last ten meetings and their last ten in Athens.
We’re halfway through the SEC season and the South Carolina match in an important game for both teams as they battle for position in the standings. Tennessee is 4th in the conference with a 7-2 record (16-5 overall). The Gamecocks are right behind in 5th place with a 6-3 record (15-4 overall).
Of the 20 matches Georgia has played so far this season, 9 have gone to five sets — including 6 of their 9 SEC matches. They’ve gone 3-6 in those games (2-4 in conference).
Tennessee’s Eve Rackham is one of four new head coaches in the SEC this year. UT has already met two of those other squads this season: Mississippi State led by Julie Darty and Texas A&M led by Bird Kuhn. Rackham’s Lady Vols won both matches. This week they’ll face the last new league coach, Tom Mendoza at South Carolina.
SC assistant coach Shonda Cole played for the Gamecocks as well, and saw action in all eight appearances against Tennessee during her career. Her team lost the first seven but in her final match vs the Lady Vols she led the team to victory. Her 29 kills in that match stand as the 7th most by a UT opposing player in the rally scoring era.
Wednesday’s match will air on ESPNU. Tennessee is 2-2 in televised matches this season, with all of them ending in a score of 3-1 for the winning team. The Lady Vols have faced South Carolina 6 times on TV since 2001 — but have only won once, back in 2008.
NEWS AND LINKS Tennessee is receiving votes in the latest Coaches Poll, coming in at an unofficial #28. UT is #24 in PrepVolleyball’s Top 64 ranking. They’re #28 in the RichKern.com Poll. The Lady Vols are also #28 in the Pablo Ranking. They’re receiving votes in the VolleyTalk Poll at #27. And in the Massey Rating they are #23.
Congratulations to local high schools Webb and Catholic! Webb won their sixth straight state volleyball championship last week, while Catholic was the runner-up in their division.

Sorry for disappearing on you guys this week! Tennessee’s eight day break fortunately coincided with the deadline for a big project I needed to work on. Another website I work at celebrated its 15th anniversary yesterday and the rest of the staff and I have spent the past week getting articles and graphics ready for the big day! Now that that is done I can more evenly split my time between sites again. I’ll spend tomorrow watching football and getting things caught up around here! Apologies again, and thanks for understanding!
UT dropped a four-setter to the 16th ranked Kentucky Wildcats this evening. More tomorrow.
The Lady Vols head to Lexington for a mid-week match vs #26 Kentucky, before taking an eight day break from competition.
MATCH NOTES Tennessee is 30-49 all-time vs Kentucky. UT is 1-9 in their last ten meetings, and 3-7 in their last ten on the road.
The UT/UK series is the most played and longest continuously played series in program history. Both sides claim different matches, but according to Tennessee Wednesday’s match will be 80th since their first meeting in 1973. The teams have played each other every year since at least 1978.
Prior to this season, Tennessee had won 2 of their last 20 matches vs ranked opponents. In 2018, the team has matched that total, winning 2 out of 4 matches vs ranked opponents.
The Lady Vols are 3-6 since 2001 in televised matches vs Kentucky. Two of those three wins came when the Wildcats were the higher ranked team.
NEWS AND LINKS Freshman of the Week: After someone pointed out on VolleyTalk that every team in the top ten of the SEC standings had earned multiple player of the week honors with the exception of Tennessee with none, the conference took note and began to rectify the situation… or maybe Lily Felts earned the Freshman of the Week award on her own! Felts’ award is just the 5th league honor by a Lady Vol in the last 5 years.
UT in the polls: Tennessee is receiving votes in the latest Coaches Poll, coming in at an unofficial #27. UT is #25 in PrepVolleyball’s Top 64 ranking. They’re #30 in the RichKern.com Poll. The Lady Vols are also #30 in the Pablo Ranking. They’re receiving votes in the VolleyTalk Poll, just outside of the rankings at #26.
Local recruiting: The local newspaper has a great piece about elite local talent at K2 Volleyball Club and Tennessee’s attempt to keep them local for college.

The Lady Vols earned a sweep of SEC foe Mississippi State this afternoon (25-22, 25-23, 25-19). More tonight.
UPDATE: Lily Felts was the only player on either side of the court to get double digit kills, with 11. Addisyn Rowe and Rocky Perinar had 9 each while Erica Treiber had 8. Treiber had a team leading 5 blocks as well. Callie Williams put up 21 assists and Sedona Hansen added 13 more. Madison Coulter had 10 digs.
The Lady Vols picked up their first sweep of league play this season.
For just the 25th time in the rally-scoring era, Tennessee won a match while hitting under .200.
UT defeated Alabama this evening in four sets (25-21, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20). More later.
UPDATE: In the first collegiate meeting between the Perinar sisters, they came out fairly even. Alabama’s Ginger Perinar had 16 kills, hit .164, put up 3 blocks, dug up 3 balls, and scored 18 points. Tennessee’s Rocky Perinar had 14 kills, hit .111, put up 5 blocks, dug up 5 balls, and scored 17 points.
Erica Treiber and Lily Felts led the Lady Vols with 16 kills. Alyssa Andreno added 9 more. Treiber had 6 blocks, Rowe had 5, and Andreno 4. Madison Coulter had an impressive night, picking up 24 digs. Giana Pellizzon had 13 and Felts 12. Sedona Hansen put up 41 assists and Callie Williams had 10.
At 4-1, Tennessee has their best conference start since 2011. And the team has won three SEC matches in a row for the first time since 2012.
UT defeated Alabama this evening in four (25-21, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20). More later.
Apologies for disappearing on you for a few days! I’ve been a little ill — actually left the Arkansas match early, which I don’t think I’ver ever done! But feeling 90% better today and looking forward to some volleyball tonight!
Normally I would do notes for the Wednesday and Sunday matches at the same time, but I am crazy busy today catching up with things missed while I was sick, so these notes will be slightly abbreviated and only cover tonight’s match.
MATCH NOTES UT is 35-18 all-time vs Alabama. The Lady Vols are 4-6 in their last 10 meetings, but 6-4 in their last 10 at home. The Tide have a 2 match winning streak — in both matches they trailed 2-1 before coming back to win in 5.
Despite the last two meetings going long, five-set matches are rare in this series — before last season only 5 such matches in 51 meetings. Including last year, 4 five-set matches have taken place between the teams in the rally-scoring era, all won by Alabama.
UT has had some issues in five-set matches the past couple of years, but hopefully things are turning around. This past week the team won their last 2 five-set match attempts since 2015, and their first two five-set matches in a row since 2012.
Tennessee freshman Raquel Perinar may get a chance to play against her sister tonight. Ginger Perinar is a junior outside hitter for Alabama, who ranks 9th in the league in kills per set. If I’m not mistaken the last time a Lady Vol faced off against her sister was on was November 23, 2012, when Tennessee’s Tiffany Baker played against Mississippi State and Chanelle Baker.
The Lady Vols are 2-3 in televised matches vs Alabama since 2001.
LINKS OF INTEREST Lady Vol junior setter Sedona Hansen has a huge spread on the front page of the local Knoxville newspaper’s sports section today. In the piece Hansen, her mother, and coach Eve Rackham, discuss Hansen’s recent milestone, her support system, her growth as a setter, and more.
UT’s Erica Treiber has been named one of thirty players across the nation as a Senior CLASS Award candidate. The award “is presented each year to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across nine different sports” and “honors the attributes of NCAA Division I senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition”. Tennessee has had two previous players earn recognition as a candidate: Nikki Fowler on the inaugural list in 2010, and Kayla Jeter in 2011.
Tennessee coach Eve Rackham talked with Brain Rice on the Eric Ainge Show this morning in WNML radio. They talked about UT in five-set matches, Treiber’s play, player buy-in, UT’s new handshake ritual, and local recruiting.
Tennessee is receiving votes in the latest Coaches Poll, coming in at an unofficial #33. UT is #27 in PrepVolleyball’s Top 64 ranking. They’ve broken in to the list at #30 in RichKern.com’s top 30 poll. The Lady Vols are #32 in the Pablo Ranking. And they’re receiving votes in the VolleyTalk Poll.
The first official NCAA RPI ranking is out, and UT comes in at #51.
According to the UT promotions page, tonight’s match is “Way Back Wednesday: 80’s” night and the “first 100 fans receive free tube socks”!

Tennessee got just their third five-set win in their last twelve attempts over three seasons, picking up a W against Missouri (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-9). More soon.
UPDATE: Erica Treiber led both teams with 19 kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Lily Felts had the second most kills of her season with 15. Tessa Grubbs, who left the match in the fourth set with an injury according to ESPN’s online streaming commentary, had 11 kills. Addisyn Rowe led UT in blocks with 6, with Alyssa Andreno not far behind with 4. Madison Coulter had 17 digs. Sedona Hansen, Giana Pellizzon, and Felts had 13 each. Felts earned her first career double-double with that effort. Hansen picked up her fourth in a row with 30 assists. Callie Williams put up 21 assists of her own.
UT’s 70 kills matches their season high, while their 84 points are the most this year.
Treiber has only had 8 hitting errors over the last 8 matches.
Along with their victory against the Tigers in their previous meeting last season, Tennessee now has their first ever two match winning streak vs Missouri.
The Lady Vols continue conference play with home matches vs Missouri and Arkansas this weekend.
Tennessee is 3-8 all-time vs Missouri. UT won the last meeting, but is 2-3 in matches in Knoxville
Tennessee is 19-20 all-time vs Arkansas. UT is 4-6 in their last ten meetings, but 6-4 in their last ten at home.
SEASON MIDPOINT STATS This Saturday marks the half way point of the regular season in terms of matches played — 15 games before Saturday and 15 after. Instead of my usual weekly notes, here’s a (little bit early) look at some individual stats at the midpoint. Keep in mind that “per set” numbers are not official until the end of the player’s season or career. Some of these numbers are very impressive and to drive that point home I’ve included comparisons where applicable.
Erica Treiber
- Hitting .405 on the year so far, Treiber could become just the second Lady Vol ever to break .400 in a season. Only (first team All American and only UT player to have her number retired) Beverly Robinson has accomplished the feat so far, back in 1983.
- Treiber is also just behind Robinson in all-time career hitting percentage with .352, trailing the top spot by only .007.
- With 62 blocks so far, Treiber could finish the year in the UT all-time season top 20. Her current 1.19 blocks per set would also be a season top 20 number.
- With 431 career blocks, Treiber is already #6 all-time at UT. At her current pace she might be able to reach 500. She also stands at #3 right now in career blocks per set with 1.17, just behind (All American honorable mention) Sarah Blum and (All American honorable mention) Leah Hinkey.
- Treiber is 132 kills away from her 1,000th career kill — a number she could reach at her current pace. She would be the first player at Tennessee to reach that milestone since (second team All American and Olympic Bronze medalist) Kelsey Robinson in 2012.
- She’s 154 attacks away from reaching career 2,000.
- Only 5 players in the rally-scoring era have put down 30 or more aces in a season at UT. Just over half way there (with 16 aces) with just over half the season to go (with 16 matches) Treiber might be able to reach that goal.
Tessa Grubbs
- At 3.37 career kills per set, Grubbs currently ranks at #10 all-time at UT.
- Grubbs is on track to potentially reach 1,000 attack attempts this season. Only two different players have reached that mark at UT in the 2010s: (second team All American and Olympic Bronze medalist) Kelsey Robinson and Kanisha Jimenez.
- Her 8.57 attacks per set over her career are good for 11th place all-time at UT so far.
- With a career hitting percentage of .264, Grubbs is in 18th place all-time on the career list at UT.
Sedona Hansen
- While splitting setting duties the past two seasons has lowered Hansen’s numbers, she still stands at #8 all-time at UT with 1,985 assists — 15 away from 2,000. Her career assists per set is 8.10, 10th all-time at UT for the moment.
- Hansen is climbing the digs chart too, with 712 all-time. That puts her at #27 on the UT career list and 12th on the career digs per set list so far with 2.91.
- With all those assists and digs, it’s no surprise Hansen is a prolific double-doubler. (Is that a word!?) Counting only double-doubles scored in rally-scoring matches, only 3 Lady Vols have more than her 39: (third team All American) Julie Knytych with 62, (third team All American) Nikki Fowler with 52, and (second team All American and Olympic Bronze medalist) Kelsey Robinson with 49.
Brooke Schumacher
- With 1,214 career digs, Schumacher ranks 9th all-time at UT. At her current pace, she might be crack the top 5. She’s 5th all-time at UT with 3.36 digs pet set, currently just below (SEC Defensive Player of the Year and All American honorable mention) Chloe Goldman, (All American honorable mention) Ellen Mullins, (SEC Defensive Player of the Year and third team All American) Amy Morris, and (second team All American and Olympic Bronze medalist) Kelsey Robinson.
- This season, her 3.37 digs per set are 19th all-time so far.
Alyssa Andreno
- With a .271 hitting percentage through her career so far, Andreno ranks 17th all-time at UT right now.
- Her 0.87 blocks per set in good for 15th on the UT career chart.
Callie Williams
- Despite sharing setting duties the past two seasons with Hansen, Williams’ number are climbing steadily. She already ranks 17th all-time at UT with 781 assists. She could become just the 16th Lady Vol to join the 1,000 assists club as early as this season at her current pace. Her 5.14 assists per set is good for 15th place at UT all-time at the moment.
- Williams is also a more direct offensive threat with her quick setter dumps working very effectively. At her current pace Williams would rank 11th all-time at UT in hitting percentage with .289!
Madison Coulter currently stands at 20th on the UT season digs per set list with 3.33.
Addisyn Rowe currently stands at 23rd on the UT season hitting percentage list with .321.
Eve Rackham
- Rackham is 10-4 through her first 14 matches. Since 1978 (when complete UT result records become available), that’s the second best start by a new head coach in their first 14 games. Only Bob Berucci’s 11-3 start in 1978 tops it.
- Tennessee has had 4 new head coaches since the Coaches Poll was instituted in 1982. Until this year, a new UT volleyball coach had never defeated a ranked team — going 0-17, and only winning 3 individual sets. Rackham has won 2 out of 4 half way through her first season.
