Quick notes: late notes, Vol Calls, the Sunseri’s, and the voice

Despite having several extra days to prepare I am still behind! The match notes I usually post Thursday mornings won’t be ready until tonight or early tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. Until then here are some other quick notes.

Coach Rob Patrick appeared on Vol Calls Wednesday night. He talked about injuries, some Missouri payback, what he likes about this team, the potential for an SEC surge, the return of Kayla Jeter, the target on their back, the line-up carousel, and the Dig Pink promotion. The link isn’t working as I check it this morning, but you should be able to listen to the program at some point online on the official site.

Local CBS affiliate WVLT had a story recently on Lady Vol Ashlyn Sunseri and her father UT football’s defensive coach Sal Sunseri.

East Tennessee Sports recently profiled the long-time voice of Lady Vol volleyball, Brian Rice.

Weekly Recaps 2012: Arkansas, South Carolina, and at Kentucky

  • Tennessee is now 16-15 vs Arkansas all-time, 34-25 vs South Carolina, and 29-41 vs Kentucky.
  • The Arkansas loss broke a nine match winning streak the team had over the Razorbacks dating back to 2007. The nine match streak vs Alabama is now the longest stretch UT has over an SEC opponent.
  • The South Carolina win extends the team’s winning streak over the Gamecocks to eight.
  • The Kentucky loss was the first sweep by the Wildcats since 1995. Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M are the only remaining SEC teams without a sweep over UT in the Rob Patrick era.
  • Mary Pollmiller reached career assist #2,000 vs Arkansas. The sophomore reached that milestone in just the 12th match of her second season (the 44th of her career) which is almost definitely the fastest any Lady Vol has ever done so.
  • Julie Knytych reached 2,000 assists in the 17th match of her sophomore year (her 48th match).
  • Erica Lear reached 2,000 assists in the 25th match of her sophomore year (her 48th match).
  • Molly Mooney reached 2,000 assists her sophomore year. It’s possible Mooney got there faster than Pollmiller since I don’t have game by game data that far back. However, she started her second season with fewer than Pollmiller, and she would need to have scored about 13.31 assists per set in her first fourteen matches while her season average was 11.97 per set.
  • Wendy Jones reached 2,000 assists her junior year.
  • Laurie Caraher reached 2,000 assists her junior or senior year
  • Christy Warren reached 2,000 assists her junior year.
  • With another match earning 20+ in two different stats this weekend, Kelsey Robinson has now accomplished the feat five times, more than any other Lady Vol in the rally scoring era.
  • Prior to the Arkansas match UT was on a season long run, win or lose, of not allowing any opponent to get more kills, assists, aces, or points than themselves. Those streaks have come to an end. All of the last three opponents out-aced the Lady Vols, Kentucky was the first to get more kills, and the Razorbacks and Wildcats both had more assists and points.
  • Kentucky held the Lady Vols to 32 kills and 39 points, both the 5th lowest since 2001, and the fewest in three years. Their four team blocks was the 10th lowest in that time. And the team hasn’t hit worse than their .107 since 2009.
  • The South Carolina game was just the sixth non-sweep match of the rally scoring era where Tennessee didn’t get a single ace.
  • Kentucky had the second fewest hitting errors of any UT opponent since 2001 with just nine.
  • Tennessee is now 13-5 in their last eighteen games on the air, but they’ve lost three of the last four. This is the first time they’ve lost back to back televised matches in the same year since 2007. This is the fourth year in a row a UT/UK match has been televised on ESPNU — the home team has won each time.

DOUBLE DOUBLES

  • vs UARK: Kelsey Robinson (14 kills & 16 digs – 37th career, 10th season)
  • vs SC: Mary Pollmiller (26 assists & 10 digs – 13th career, 5th season);
    Kelsey Robinson (21 kills & 22 digs – 38th career, 11th season)

MATCH HIGHS

  • Tiffany Baker: assists (was 2, now 3 vs SC), solo blocks (was 2, now 3 vs SC), total blocks in a four-set match (was 4, now 5 vs SC)
  • Leslie Cikra: assists (matched with 2 vs SC)
  • DeeDee Harrison: digs in a four-set match (matched with 2 vs SC)
  • Shealyn Kolosky digs in a three-set match (matched with 2 vs UK)
  • Mary Pollmiller: digs in a three-set match (matched with 9 vs UK), total blocks in a four-set match (matched with 3 vs UARK)

MILESTONES

  • Tiffany Baker: 400 career kills, 25 season blocks
  • Nikki Brice: 10 season aces
  • Leslie Cikra: 300 season attacks, 50 season blocks
  • DeeDee Harrison: 600 career kills, 1,200 career attacks, 100 season attacks, 25 season blocks
  • Kayla Jeter: 2,000 career attacks, 25 season blocks
  • Ellen Mullins: 800 career digs, 200 season digs
  • Mary Pollmiller: 2,000 career assists, 500 season assists, 100 season digs
  • Kelsey Robinson: 2,600 career attacks, 80 career aces, 1,100 career points, 600 season attacks, 25 season blocks

Kentucky sweeps

For the first time in seventeen years Kentucky swept the Lady Vols tonight (25-15, 25-21, 25-20). I’ll have more tomorrow Friday. Check out the UT site for more.

Match Notes 2012: at Kentucky
coloradostate
  • Tennessee is 29-40 all time vs Kentucky. The teams are tied at 6-4 in their last 10 meetings. UT is 6-4 in the last 10 meetings in Lexington.
  • The Tennessee/Kentucky match-up is the longest running continuously played rivalry in Tennessee’s history — the teams have played each other every year since at least 1978.
  • The team is an impressive 13-4 in their last seventeen games on the air, but they’ve lost two of the last three, both times in five-set matches.
  • This is the fourth year in a row the UT/UK match has been televised on ESPNU. The previous three times the home team won.
  • All the annual non-academic SEC award winners from 2011 will be on the court tonight: Coach of the Year Rob Patrick, Player of the Year Kelsey Robinson, Libero of the Year Stephanie Klefot, and Freshman of the Year Mary Pollmiller.
  • Despite their 7-6 record the Wildcats have been fairly tough defensively, holding nine of their thirteen opponents to under a .190 hitting percentage.
  • On Sunday, Kentucky senior Ashley Frazier reached 1,000 career kills. Tennessee junior Kelsey Robinson is just 17 kills away from becoming the 18th Lady Vol to reach that milestone.
  • This is the eighth match in a row in this rivalry where at least one of the teams is ranked: both teams came into a match ranked twice, UT has been the sole ranked team three times, and UK has been the sole ranked team three times. The underdog has won four out of seven times. The Lady Vols are 6-1 over all those matches and have won every match where only one team was ranked.
  • Tennessee has not been swept by Kentucky since 1995.

Update note

With another short week upon us, and an open date following I’m going to adjust my normal posting schedule a bit. Today I’ll be watching the polls and player of the week announcements. Tomorrow I’ll have some Kentucky notes and the national and conference statistics. And Wednesday I’ll be heading to Lexington. After that game we’ll have 9 days until the next match, the longest such gap of the season. During that break I’ll post a recap for the games of this past week along with the UK match. And I’ll finally get caught up on the logjam of photos that still need to be posted!

New substitution rules in place this season

Now that the team is back in Knoxville more often you may notice one of the big rule changes instituted this year. Since the switch to 25 points a few years ago teams have been allowed 12 substitutions per set. As recently as 2001, teams were only allowed 8. But beginning this season the limit has been increased to 15 per set. LSU head coach Fran Flory, the NCAA Rules Committee chairman, said “the rules committee as a whole felt more substitutions in a match can help student-athlete well-being and keep student-athletes happy”. She added “The traditionalists of the game probably don’t want this. They want us to make it truer and make people play all positions so players become well-rounded. That certainly was a big topic of discussion. But ultimately, this committee sided with the opportunities for student-athletes”.

Tennessee head coach Rob Patrick is among the fans of the change. “I think you’ll see more 6-2s being run because of the ability now to not run out of subs. You can run the 6-2 with a double-sub. I like the rule… I do think it will get more players in the game and allow them to play more in matches”. USC head coach Mick Haley probably counts himself among the traditionalists Flory mentioned. With so many substitutions available he worries that coaches may move to player specialization — taking an elite hitter and not worrying about training them to serve or play back row, for example. “If we’re going to do that let’s just leave (the same) three players in the front row all the time and three in the back row all the time”. Former Nebraska coach Terry Pettit goes even further saying “It’s not too difficult to imagine that sometime in the near future we may even eliminate the concept of rotating”. He adds that it could even turn off players to volleyball as specialization leads to less playing time. “Nobody wants to be a middle blocker anymore because they don’t get to stay in the game”.

Current Nebraska coach John Cook may be one of the most vocal opponents to the rule. He points out how a smaller amount of substitutions can work as an equalizer. “Stanford just signed a 6-8 girl. How many girls around are 6-8? Now, make her play back row and I’ll take two 5-11 kids and beat you”. He said when you increase substitutions you remove the equalization factor, which in turn could actually effect recruiting. “There are very few kids that are 6-foot-5 and athletic. There are only so many to go around, and the top programs are going to get those. They won’t have to worry about training them back row. There will be no equalizer when they have to go to the back row”. But Patrick notes the opposite is just as plausible. “Better teams get the better all-around players. The teams that aren’t as good, they might get a tall player and the reason one of the top teams doesn’t recruit her is because maybe she doesn’t have the skills to pass and do things in all six rotations. She might not be as good a volleyball player, but you now have athletes on the team and can take them out and replace them with a better volleyball player in the back row. I think the more subs the more it evens the field”.

Another problem critics point to is that it could put the United States behind in the international game where teams are allowed only 6 subs per set, meaning athletes need to be all-around players. Cook said, “You have to be an all-around player to play internationally, and many of our players want to continue to play in the international game. We are going to continue to be a program that develops players to play beyond Nebraska by developing experience with them playing all the way around”. But rather than try to shoehorn NCAA play into the international game, Patrick says we should allow each to be their own animal. “We don’t have to make our game fit the FIVB version. We’re the college volleyball game and I like that our rules are a little bit different in order to take care of what college volleyball is all about”.

A more minor issue, but one that might be more noticeable to fans is the potential for it to slow down matches. Between a possible 30 subs and 4 time outs every set Cook told fans, “I want to apologize now to the Husker Nation for that, because I think it’s a rule change that will impact the game greatly in a negative way. We have such great fans here and get such great TV coverage… but this rule change to 15 subs is going to drag the game out”. Coach Patrick believes the refs will take care to speed up substitutions to prevent that from happening.

Coach Flory wants people to know that “We’re never going to please every coach with this one. We even discussed reducing subs down to six. I don’t think those guys realize that. I think they think we just went in a room and made a decision. That was not the case. This was a very long conversation”. But she did make sure to note that she didn’t necessarily agree the rule change herself.

be sure to check out the links above for some great coverage on this issue

Lady Vols fall to Arkansas

Tennessee falls to an SEC opponent at home for the first time since 2010, as Arkansas gets the win in four (25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17). More soon.

With 45 tonight, Mary Pollmiller set up her 2,000th career assist. She also led the squad with 3 blocks. Tiffany Baker led both teams with 15 kills. Kelsey Robinson had 14 along with 16 digs, for the double double. Leslie Cikra hit .409 with 11 kills. Ellen Mullins had 12 digs, while Nikki Brice and Baker had 8 each. Tennessee hit .150 as a team, their lowest of the season and the first time since 2009 they’ve been that low.

Match Notes 2012: Arkansas and South Carolina
coloradostatebyu
  • Tennessee is 16-14 vs Arkansas all-time. They’ve won 9 out of the last 10 matches vs the Razorbacks and 6 of the last 10 in Knoxville. The team is on a 9 match winning streak, not having lost a match since 2007 — coming in to the season, their longest stretch of victories over an SEC opponent.
  • Tennessee is 33-25 vs South Carolina all-time. They’re 8-2 in the last 10 matches. At home the Lady Vols are 9-1, not having lost to the Gamecocks since 2002. The team is on a 7 match winning streak.
  • Arkansas has only had three road matches all season while playing at home nine times. Tennessee has only played at home three matches all season while playing on the road eight times.
  • The Razorbacks have played two ranked opponents this season so far, #13 Florida and #22 Michigan. Though they lost both matches, they took both teams the distance losing each match by two points in the fifth set.
  • Arkansas didn’t start their volleyball program until 1994. But in those 18 years they have been on top of the SEC West 11 times.
  • Senior Kasey Heckelman has played against Tennessee every year of her career, but for two different teams: Louisville and Arkansas.
  • The Gamecocks are off to a 13-0 start, their best ever. With a win on Friday vs Auburn, South Carolina would be looking to break their longest overall winning streak in school history at Tennessee on Sunday.
  • South Carolina is one of just seven remaining undefeated teams in the country. The others are: BYU, Michigan State, Northwestern, Oregon, USC, and Washington.
  • From 1974 to 2001, UT and South Carolina played each other 37 times with the Gamecocks just leading the series 19-18. But in all those games only a single match was decided in five sets.
  • The South Carolina series has consisted of three long streaks by the teams. Tennessee started off with a 17-4 run from 1974 to 1993. Then SC went on a 18-1 run from 1994-2002 (that included a 14 match winning streak — the second longest losing run against an opponent in UT history). Since then the Lady Vols are 15-3.
  • Tiffany Baker and Olivia Okoro will be facing former Hebron High School teammate and now Gamecock Jenna Allen, with whom they won a Texas state championship in 2010.
  • UT head coach Rob Patrick and SC head coach Scott Swanson were on opposing sidelines in their first collegiate jobs. In 1996, Patrick was an assistant coach of Pac-10 powerhouse Stanford while Swanson was an assistant coach of conference rival Arizona State.
  • Patrick has faced both this weekend’s opposing head coaches previously at Tennessee when they were assistants at other schools. Arkansas’ Robert Pulliza was at Kentucky for eight matches from 2004-2007, while Swanson was at Minnesota for the 2009 match in the NCAA Tournament.
  • With 52 more kills Kelsey Robinson will become just the 18th Lady Vol to join the 1,000 kills club. With 36 assists, Mary Pollmiller will become the 7th Lady Vol with 2,000 assists.
