Match Notes 2013: Mississippi

NOTES

  • Tennessee is 40-7 all-time vs Mississippi. They are 9-1 in their last ten meetings, and 9-1 in their last ten meetings in Knoxville.
  • The Rebels have only defeated Tennessee three times since 2001. They got a season sweep in the two matches played in 2007. And after winning earlier this year they’re looking to repeat that achievement in 2013.
  • Mississippi’s blocking was a big factor in their win in October. Their 18 team blocks was the fourth most by a UT opponent in the rally scoring era.
  • A Lady Vol win would give the team their 10th victory in their 26th match of the year, which would tie for the longest time to reach that season milestone during coach Rob Patrick’s tenure.
  • The last three matches in a row in the series were played at Mississippi — the home team lost the first two games before winning the last. The only other three-match home stand for either team was in 1990-91 when three matches in a row between the teams were held in Knoxville.   • Mississippi head coach Joe Getzin and Lady Vol setter Lexi Dempsey have something in common: they both spent a year in the University of Portland’s volleyball program before moving south. Getzin was the Pilots’ head coach in 1999 before resigning to become an assistant coach at South Carolina. Dempsey spent her freshman season at Portland, where she was second on the team in assists and the leader in aces, before transferring to Tennessee.
  • Junior Nikki Brice has played in every single match since she came to UT in 2011. She’s the first player since Nikki Fowler (2007-2010) to play the first match of her freshman year and not miss a match this far into her career. And she’s just the fourth player since 2001 to do so, joining Julie Knytych (2002-2005) and Kylie Marshall (2006-2009).
